The Lhasa Apso was once used as a monastery watchdog. Tibet is the country of origin for the Lhasa Apso. Lhasa Apsos are named after the Tibetan city of Lhasa, a sacred place. Lhasa Apsos only belonged to Tibetan royals and holy men for thousands of years. According to Tibetan legend, when the master of a Lhasa Apso died, his soul would enter the body of his dog, and so these dogs were considered sacred.
