Lhasa Apso    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adult Women Only
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Aggressive

About two years we adopted our Lhasa Apso. Initially she was a great and loyal family dog and of course she still is. However, shortly after we adopted her we noticed unpredictable aggression(growling, lunging and barking) towards strangers, especially men. As soon as she gets to know a person she is very docile, yet unpredictable with others. We had her trained with a well respected trainer in Santa Barbara and there was some success, especially with the use of an electronic collar. However, she is still unpredictable with strangers as well as other animals. She did get used to our cat after two weeks and there were no problems thereafter. ... (Read More)However, due to her unpredictable nature with strangers and even friends that visit our home, we cannot keep her anymore. We believe(as well as our trainer) that she was not socialized as young dog and may have been abused. There was no indication from the original adoption agency that she was aggressive towards strangers, so of course it is important for you to know all the details. She is truly a wonderful family dog and probably the most affectionate dog that I have had in my life, but her unpredictable nature is what is leading us to put her up for adoption. We have all her documents and papers. She loves walks with her owner!!!! (Less)

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE ONLY PLACE DOGS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AS A HOME CHECK AND TRIAL PERIOD ARE REQUIRED. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS. THANK YOU. Maddy is an adorable and sweet 7-8year old Lhasa/Cocker spaniel mix. She was originally pulled from a shelter and lived with a dog of ours that we had placed in a home, named Alex. Just a few months ago after many years, the owner contacted us asking that we take both dogs as she could no longer care for them. We took both dogs into our foundation. Maddy is a very loving, and spunky girl who would do great in a home with another dog, or as a companion dog. She is good with all people and other dogs. ... Lhasa Apso Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Blind

Maya is a sweet 7 yr old Maltipoo girl who almost didn't make it out of a high kill shelter. She sat in the shelter waiting to be rescued, but no one ever came. Maya is well behaved, loves to cuddle and follow you from room to room. She's house trained, quiet and gets along well with her foster siblings. She goes to work with her foster mom, and does great! Maya has cataracts, but can get around just fine. She isn't totally blind, and can still see most things. We had her spayed, fully vaccinated and chipped. Maya likes to get to know someone first before they become too grabby, so she needs to go to an adult only home. Maya was clearly ... (Read More)neglected in her previous home, and had really bad teeth. We gave her a full dental cleaning, and many rotted teeth had to be extracted. She eats just fine, and is otherwise a happy girl. She'd make a great companion to a retired person, or someone who works from home. Maya is very affectionate and devoted without being clingy. If you'd like to meet her, please complete our adoption application found on dexterfoundation.com We're only adopting out to the Southern California area. Adoption donation $250 (Less)

Lhasa Apso Mix    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Needs to be Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Everyone of our pups has a story behind them. This little guy's story is sad because it is so unnecessary. Benny is a 13-year-old Lhasa Apso. He has not been neutered. He has a fawn colored coat with medium length hair. He weighs approximately 10-12 pounds. He is a love, loves to snuggle, is obedient, knows some commands and likes to play outside and go for walks and even to the dog park. I am not so sure about that unless you take him to the small dog section. He is 13 and small. So his trusted family is surrendering him because they say he is urinating in the house. They did not distinguish this from being incontinent where he ... (Read More)has loss of his bladder. He is not incontinent, so our suspicion is that they did not take him out enough. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-06-02-00236Koala (female)

Lhasa Apso Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Arthritis

Koala, female Lhasa Apso/Terrier Mix, whose estimated date of birth is 4/25/11 and weight is 25 pounds, was rescued in poor condition. It is clear she had been neglected for a very long time. She received the medical attention she needed and is special needs. She had her teeth cleaned and blood tests which revealed she has Cushing's Disease and an old injury to her left shoulder and elbow. The most common cause of Cushing's disease (85% to 90% of all cases) is a tumor on the pituitary gland (which is located at the base of the brain), which causes the pituitary gland to overproduce a hormone (ACTH) that stimulates the adrenal glands to ... (Read More)produce cortisol. Cushing's Disease is managed with prescription medication. Koala is doing well and ready for adoption. She has been spayed, vaccinated, dewormed and microchipped. Koala is housetrained and gets along well with other dogs and cats. Koala is sweet, friendly and no trouble. Koala is looking for that special someone who will give her a loving home and she will be a loving companion. $50 adoption fee, cash only, which is to help reimburse for a portion of expenses of dog rescue and rehabilitation. Adoption contract required. Local adoption within a 75 mile radius. If interested in Koala, please tell us a little about you, your family, your other pets, where you live. etc. Thank you. Our adoption process involves meeting the animal, either at Petco in Menifee on Saturdays from 10-2 or by appointment on other days at the rescue in Quail Valley. We have the best interest of the animal in mind and our goal is to find a good, permanent home for each of our rescued animals. We have the right to decline an application if we feel it is not a good match or fit for the animal. If you like the animal and we both feel it is a good match, an application and adoption contract is completed. A convenient day/time is arranged for us to deliver the animal to its new home to do a home check (to make sure the home is safe and secure). We will collect the adoption fee (cash only) when we deliver the animal to its new home. All our adoptions are on a trial basis because our goal is to have a successful adoption where the animal has a good permanent home and never ends up in a bad situation again. We ask that you give the animal a chance to adjust and settle in his new home and environment. Going to a new home with new people and a new environment is traumatic and stressful. It will take time for the animal to become comfortable around you and his/her new home. This should be a bonding period where you get to know the animal and connect with it, spend time with it and take things slow. He/she will need to get to know and trust you and learn the rules of the house and what is expected of him/her. This takes time, sometimes 2-3 weeks. During this time we will hold the adoption fee and if the adoption is not working out, we ask that you contact us and return the animal and we will refund your adoption fee. (Less)
